これは、今後の報道に要注意だ。中国政府が握り潰してしまわないとも限らない。というか、事件発生後1ヶ月も経た今頃になって取り上げられるってのも変だ。

【香港=佐藤一之】15日付の香港紙サウスチャイナ・モーニング・ポストは、反日デモが起きた直後、北京・天安門広場でフィリピン人父娘が中国人の若者に襲われて死亡し、日本人と間違われた襲撃だった可能性もあると伝えた。

 事件発生は4月19日。この父娘はツアー旅行中で、一緒にいた母親も重傷を負って病院に運び込まれた。フィリピンの外交官が中国側から入手した情報によれば、加害者は中国江蘇省出身の25歳の男で殺害後直ちに逮捕された。動機などは明らかではない。

 北京では4月9日に反日デモが発生、日本大使館が投石されるなどの騒ぎとなった。殺された父親の会社の同僚は「彼は日本人に外見が似ていた」などと同紙に証言しており、フィリピンの外交官も「日本人の家族と間違えられたのではないかという憶測について早くはっきりさせたい」と話している。 (21:32)

A FAMILY vacation had suddenly turned into a tragedy.

The daughter of the Filipino tourist who was stabbed to death in Beijing, China, was also killed in the attack. His wife remains in critical condition, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement yesterday.

Regina Mia Madrigal was also stabbed to death like her father, Emmanuel (not Eduardo as earlier reported), the DFA said. Emmanuel's wife was identified as Vivian.

Sightseeing tour

The Inquirer learned that the Madrigal couple and three of their four daughters had joined a tour group organized by a travel agency. The Madrigals were visiting one of Beijing's top tourist attractions when they were attacked by a knife-wielding man.

Madrigal was in his early 50s.

"Three Filipinos were stabbed by a Chinese national who ran amuck at the Tiananmen Square near the Mao Zedong Mausoleum in Beijing between 9 and 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2005," Charge d' Affaires Jaime Victor

Ledda of the Philippine Embassy in Beijing said in his report to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo, which was quoted in the statement.

The victims were rushed to the Peking Union Hospital.

Ledda said that a certain Wang, 25, from Jiangsu province, was identified as the assailant and had been arrested by the People's Republic of China (PROC) Public Security Bureau, Tiananmen Square branch.

SECRETARY ROMULO CONVEYS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILY OF 2 FILIPINO TOURISTS WHO DIED AS A RESULT OF ASSAULT IN BEIJING; DIRECTS BEIJING PE TO EXTEND ASSISTANCE; CHINESE TOURISM AND FOREIGN AFFAIRS AUTHORITIES CONVEY REGRETS AND ASSURE UTMOST ASSISTANCE

21 April 2005 – Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo today conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Emmanuel Madrigal and his daughter Regina Mia, who both died after a stabbing incident in Beijing.

The Secretary sent his condolences to the family after receiving the report of Chargé d’Affaires (CDA), a.i. Jaime Victor B. Ledda of the Philippine Embassy in Beijing, People’s Republic of China (PROC) that three Filipinos were stabbed by a Chinese national who ran amuck at the Tiananmen Square near the Mao Zedong Mausoleum in Beijing between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 19 April 2005.

CDA Ledda further reported that upon receiving word of the incident, personnel of the Philippine Embassy were immediately deployed to the Peking Union Hospital and to the Beijing International Hotel to extend assistance to the Madrigals and the members of the tour group who were with the Madrigals during the incident.

While appreciating the assistance of the Philippine Embassy, the Madrigal family has requested the public to respect their privacy and grief over this unfortunate incident and for CDA Ledda to withhold any further information on the condition of the Madrigals.

The Department, therefore, would appreciate the kind understanding of the inquiring public on the Madrigal family.

CDA Ledda further reported to Secretary Romulo that upon receiving news of the incident from the Philippine Embassy in Beijing, the Asian Department of the PROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave assurances that they would extend assistance. Mr. Yu Changjiang, head of the Beijing Tourism Administration, and Mr. Li Guobin, Deputy Director of the Beijing Foreign Affairs Office, visited the hospital on separate occasions to convey their regrets and their assurances that utmost assistance would be extended.

In conveying his condolences, Secretary Romulo instructed the Office of the Undersecretary of Migrant Workers’ Affairs (OUMWA) and the Philippine Embassy in Beijing to extend additional assistance as needed by the Madrigal family and to coordinate closely with the police authorities in the investigation of the case as well as the prosecution of the assailant.

CDA Ledda said the PROC Public Security Bureau, Tiananmen Square branch, has arrested the assailant, identified as Mr. Wang, 25 years old of Jiangsu province. The police authorities are establishing the motive for the assault, CDA Ledda added. END
